Every time I hear Ain’t No Stopping Us Now by R&B duo McFadden and Whitehead, it lifts my spirits. Even though the song was not written as social commentary, it was interpreted that way, and therefore have infused it with a larger meaning. This song especially has relevance for the current moment we are in, not only as a country, but as Black people. The murders of black people by police and vigilantes this past couple of years has galvanized many people to join long-standing movements against police brutality, and increased national media attention on issues of institutional racism in policing and mass incarceration. The lyrics, “I know you’ll refuse to be held down anymore! Don’t you let nothing, nothing, stand in your way!” perfectly encapsulates the current Black Lives Matter movement.
